Ryan MacInnis played hero in OT, securing the game-winner to give Kölner Haie the 5-4 victory over Tappara Tampere in this tight contest between the two clubs.

Cologne's Patrick Russell secured his second career goal in his second career CHL game when he whacked home a rebound from the near side. He then added to that total in the dying minutes of the first when he pounced on another loose puck to make it 2-0.

Second period play got underway with the Finns creating time and space to engineer the equaliser. A turnover allowed Joachim Blichfeld to get in behind the defense and roof a backhander to level the score at 1-1.

Tappara then registered their second and third tallies ten minutes later and two minutes apart. Benjamin Rautiainen cashed in on the powerplay when he one-timed it from the far circle. Then William Wiå gave the Finns their first lead of the night when he swatted home an errant rebound past Janne Juvonen to make it 3-2.

Still trailing by one, the Germans continued to put on the pressure in the latter stage of the period and their effort was rewarded when Marcel Noebels secured his third of the season at 38:11 - 

Then, Noebels registered his fourth marker just minutes into the third when he collected the puck and swept it past Christian Heljanko as Cologne retook the lead.

But a powerplay opportunity midway through the final stanza allowed the Finns to tie it up when Vilho Vanhatalo found the net for his second of the competition. 

Neither side managed to break the deadlock following the end of regulation and so the extra session followed. In OT, it was solid defence leading to an excellent offensive opportunity as MacInnis took control of a flip pass, settled it down, and shoveled it past Heljanko to lift his team over Tappara.
