Sparta Prague emerged victorious in a shootout in their clash with TPS Turku. After a 2-2 tie in regulation, the game went to OT and furthermore a shootout. Filip Chlapík scored the game-winning goal for the Czechs as goaltender Alexander Salák pulled off some big saves against their Finnish opponents.
Sparta forward Zdeněk Doležal broke the deadlock on the powerplay at 7:27. Roman Horák picked him out on the opposite side of the net and Doležal took care of the rest - blasting a nicely-placed shot from a tight angle into the Turku net.
Sparta's Erik Thorell picked up a hooking penalty 17 minutes in and Turku finally had their chance to push for an equaliser with an extra man on the ice.
It took a while, but some quick passing play and a powerful shot from Mitch Hults broke down the Sparta defence, as the Finns opened their account for the night seconds before the end of the first period.
The second period saw Sparta gain back a one goal lead 12 minutes in, as Ladislav Zikumund was able to find the back of Andrey Kareev's net off the rebound, just after a teammate hit the crossbar. Though Turku enjoyed two powerplays towards the end of the period, they were unable to get back into the game
It took the Finns well into the third period to score their second of the night, but it was well worth the wait.
A few quick passes from Turku got the puck right in front of Alexander Salák and Tyler Steenbergen was able to just about slide it in.
Sparta had a chance to win the game on the powerplay five minutes before the final buzzer but were unable to find the back of the net and the game went to three-on-three OT.
The extra space on the ice freed up both team's snipers to properly test out the goalies, but neither the Czechs nor the Finns were able to end the game in sudden death - after five minutes, it was time for the shootout.
Sparta's Filip Chlapík scored the first and only goal of the shootout as Alexander Salák went on to save all five of Turku's shots to win Sparta the extra point from this evenly matched game against Turku.
