- Třinec qualify for the Round of 16
- Oświęcim's early struggles were their downfall
- Czech side scored five goals in the first period
Oceláři Třinec authored an impressive victory over Unia Oświęcim, defeating their Polish rivals by a 7-3 final. The Czechs exploded for five goals in the first period and never let up, securing two more in the third to help earn their place in the Round of 16.
It was a story of unlikely heroes for the hosts in the opening frame to advance their game against Oświęcim. The Czech side got things going early, netting three goals in the first three minutes and adding two more to finish off a six-goal first period that saw the visitors answer with a late-period tally.
Miloš Roman netted the club's first, and his first, when a giveaway in the Polish zone led to a two-on-none the other way with Roman finishing it on the backhand. Then, Patrik Hrehorčák put one past Linus Lundin to secure his first of the campaign when he received a beautiful feed in front of the Polish net which he had no problem burying.
This trend of firsts for the Czechs' continued as their third of the contest was scored by Tomáš Kundrátek who had zero tallies up until he converted on a brilliant second effort that saw him collect his own rebound and slide it five-hole to extend the goal-gap once again.
Třinec's fourth goal was the product of a soft defence once again that allowed Daniel Kurovský to force his way in and behind them as he tucked the puck past the left pad of Lundin. Andrej Nestrašil concluded the scoring for the home side when he lifted one far post.
Fortunately, Oświęcim found some life in the final minute when Hampus Olsson capitalised on a rebound to get his team on the board and cut the deficit to four. This would be the only bright spot in an otherwise disastrous first period for the Poles who had not conceded five goals in a game so far this season.
A better effort in the second saw the Polish side continue to put a dent in Třinec's lead when they made good on a powerplay opportunity at 28:34. Christopher Liljewall hammered a one-timer past Ondřej Kacetl to make it a 5-2 game.
The Czechs answered in the third with their sixth of the night from their sixth goal scorer in Libor Hudáček who wired home a one-timer on Třinec's fourth man advantage.
But the Poles continued to cause trouble for the home side, registering their third marker off a beautiful set up play with Olsson leaving the puck at the point for Daniel Olsson Trkulja who skated down main street and wristed it glove side to once again make it a three-goal game.
Hudáček's second of the game, however, would help seal the victory for the Czech side as their dominance in the early stage set them up for their fourth win of campaign and Playoffs qualification.
