- Turku pick up their first win of the season
- Växjö unable to punish Turku despite dominating the stat sheet
- Turku will have to wait until tomorrow to see if they are still in the playoff hunt after their win
Teams are looking to book their places in the Round of 16 in this years Champions Hockey League, and TPS Turku may have a mountain to climb to do just that, but with a win against the Växjö Lakers on game day five, they're not done in Group A just yet.
With Turku needing to win to keep their hopes of progressing alive, they couldn’t have asked for a better start.
A shot from Elmeri Eronen from the point was deflected on it’s way towards goal, finding it’s way past Adam Åhman in the Växjö net, with Aarne Intonen being credited with the final touch to open the scoring on the night, and open the scoring on the CHL season for himself.
Turku would run into plenty of penalty trouble through the period with Växjö unable to capitalise until it was third time lucky. Right as they won the draw to start the powerplay, Olle Lycksell played a beautiful pass out front to Pontus Holmberg who just had to redirect the puck goal bound, beating Eetu Anttila to tie the game at one goal apiece heading into the second period.
Växjö would carry a man advantage into the middle frame after Samuli Vainionpää was ejected from the game late in the first, but they couldn't get much going on the powerplay, and instead it was Turku who found the lead again. A great stretch pass from Elmeri Eronen to set up Aarne Intonen again for the go ahead goal, after Intonen pulled a great move to get around the defender to rip home his second of the night and the only goal of the second period, as Turku carried the lead into the third, despite being heavily outshot through 40 minutes 21-6.
Neither side was able to solve either goaltender through the third period, but eventually Turku sealed victory as time ticked away, as Växjö pulled the goalie, Topias Haapanen took the puck up ice, feeding it across to Eetu Liukas who placed the puck into the back of the net to seal a 3-1 victory for Turku.
