- Växjö Lakers stave off a late surge to gain ground in Group A
- TPS Turku score two late goals
- Erik Josefsson scored two in the first to give Växjö some security early on
A late surge wasn't enough for TPS Turku as the Växjö Lakers held on to win an all-important game by a final of 4-2.
Shot on goal totals after 20 minutes were 10-2 in favour of Växjö who found twine first thanks to Erik Josefsson’s second and third tallies of the competition.
Josefsson’s first came at the midway mark when the Swede authored a beautiful deflection from the slot to get his team on the board. Five minutes later, the forward found himself on the receiving end of a Glenn Gustafsson dish which he promptly fed to the back of the net, beating Turku's Eetu Anttila over the blocker to give the home side a 2-0 advantage to end the first.
As the teams switched directions to begin period two, an early penalty saw Växjö down a man just 28 seconds in. Their risk, however, was no reward for Turku who barely managed a shot on net during the 2-minute man-advantage.
With ten minutes gone, a prime opportunity for Turku came when Juuso Pärssinen danced around a pair of Växjö defenders and found himself 1-on-1 against Adam Åhman, but the Swedish netminder's pads spoiled Pärssinen's party and kept the Finnish side scoreless.
Minutes later, Turku's chances of claiming victory were jeopardised again when some beautiful play down low saw the home side take a commanding 3-0 lead. Växjö's leading scorer, Olle Lycksell, coralled the puck behind the net to set up a Joel Persson one-timer that whizzed past a helpless Anttila.
Växjö tested Anttila early in the third, but the Finnish netminder did well to keep the game from getting out of hand. Despite their defensive awareness, however, the visitors continued to be met with strong resistance.
Both sides traded chances in the final frame, with Växjö owning the more dangerous opportunities, including a 2-on-0, but it would be Turku who would make it interesting for the home side with a late period tally, off their their eleventh shot on goal, courtesy of Eetu Liukas.
But the visitors weren't done yet. With two minutes remaining, Turku scored their second unanswered goal when Mikael Pyyhtiä parked himself in front of the net and chipped one in to cut the deficit to one.
With the home crowd on the edge of their seats, the visitors continued pressing in the closing seconds. As is protocol when down late, Turku pulled their netminder in favour of the extra attacker, but all hopes of leveling the match were extinguished when Martin Lundberg launched the puck into the empty net as Växjö did what they needed to do to maintain their Playoff hopes.
