- ZSC Lions Zurich outshoot Frolunda 32-19 to pick up their first win of the season
- Top powerplay conversions by the Swiss side
- Frölunda Gothenburg hampered by 35 minutes of penalties
Off the back of a tough loss at home to Finnish side IFK Helsinki, the ZSC Lions Zurich were a renewed team outshooting Frölunda Gothenburg in the first period, but it didn't take long for the four-time CHL Champions to make their mark. Five minutes into the first period Frölunda forward Johan Sundström, rifled a bullet from the slot giving the Swedes a 1-0 lead. Zurich had a pair of opportunities but towering netminder Matthew Tomkins had it covered.
Frölunda's Mattias Norlinder took the first penalty of the game giving the Swiss side a golden opportunity to cash in. ZSC's forward Simon Bodenmann netted a short-side goal off a pass from teammate Marcus Krüger making it 1-1.
Minutes later Frölunda had the man advantage after ZSC defender Dario Trutmann took a minor penalty. ZSC staved off the Swedes briefly, however an awkward fall on the boards by a ZSC player gave Frölunda a momentary 5-on-3 advantage, and defenceman Mattias Norlinder wasted no time blasting the puck past netminder Lukas Flüeler, and giving the Swedes a 2-1 lead going into the period break.
Frölunda pressed hard in the opening minutes of the second period, and despite having the lion's share of puck possession, they were unlucky in their offensive attempts. ZSC forced the Swedes wide at every opportunity, while Flueler scooped up the shots that made their way to the net.
Defenceman Christian Folin took Frölunda's second penalty of the game, giving the Swiss side the opportunity to equalise but Frölunda managed to defend their advances.
With less than 2 minutes remaining in the second period, ZSC's Phil Baltisberger took a minor penalty for holding. Seconds later ZSC's Dario Trutmann received another, giving Frölunda a two man advantage. The remaining seconds were a succession of passes, and a barrage of shots on netminder Lukas Flüeler who was a vertiable brick wall.
Frölunda kicked off the third period with 30 seconds left on the powerplay and continued to press. With the penalty-kill over ZSC's Ryan Hayes went to work, equalising the game with a bullet that deflected off the helmet of netminder Matthew Tomkins, and into the net to make it 2-2.
After a series of scuffles, it was deja vu for ZSC fans who waited for officials to confirm a series of penalties: Frölunda's Jan Mursak was done for the night after a spearing call, while a minor went to the Swiss side. With a five-minute powerplay ZSC were on task. A quick wristshot from Marcus Krüger, off a pass from Dominik Diem gave the Swiss side their first lead of the night (3-2). ZSC had several more opportunties with the man advantage, while Frölunda were lucky to maintain a one goal deficit.
Things got worse for the Swedish side after minor penalties from Vikor Ekbom and Nicklas Lasu, giving the homeside another chance to extend their lead. Tomkins' efforts between the pipes was exceptional, and kept the Swedes in the game. With less than two minutes of even strength play Frölunda pulled their goalie for last attempt to equalise the game, but a quick turnover saw ZSC's Justin Sigrist set up and seal the deal with an empty net goal and a final score of 4-2.
