- Markus Nenonen: tying goal late in 3rd, shootout winner
- Gregory Hofmann: 2 5-on-3 goals for Zug
- Joona Voutilainen: 33 saves for HPK
Markus Nenonen scored the tying goal late in the third period and then was credited with the shootout-winner as HPK Hämeenlinna got their first Champions Hockey League win in their second game.
After their opening loss in Pilsen in overtime, HPK players stated their need to stay out of the penalty box but this was a rough game and it was the EV Zug power play that nearly cost them this game, with the home team twice striking while up two men. In fact, Zug’s two 5-on-3 goals were nearly identical.
Just past the 11-minute mark of the first period, Raphael Díaz found Gregory Hofmann at the side of the net. Young Jere Innala scored his second of the tournament early in the second period on an HPK power play, firing the puck upstairs on Leonardo Genoni, but in the last minute of the middle frame, Díaz found Hofmann with a cross-ice pass and he scored on the one-timer to restore the Zug lead.
Once again, HPK tied it early in the third period, this time Filip Krivošík on a wrap-around followed by a high backhander. But Zug got that one back less than two minutes later, with David McIntyre re-directing Lino Martschini’s shot past Joona Voutilainen. It looked like that might be enough to wrap up Zug's second straight game in regulation time but Nenonen scored a beautiful goal with 3:13 to play, spinning to elude a check and then firing a low wrister past Genoni to force overtime.
After a scoreless overtime period, Nenonen scored in the fourth round of the shootout to put HPK ahead and then, after a Genoni save, Krivošík ended the game in the fifth round with a nifty goal.
