- Rögle extend winning streak, still unbeaten this season
- Zug lose to Rögle for second time, take a point this time
- Anton Bengtsson scored the game-winning goal in OT
In a repeat of last week’s Game Day 1 tie, Rögle Ängelholm beat EV Zug for the second time this season, this time sharing a point with the Swiss giants. Anton Bengtsson scored the game-winning goal one minute into OT as the Swedes extend their winning streak to three out of three so far this season.
There was no time to waste in this much-anticipated rematch in Switzerland – as soon as the puck hit the ice, it was game time. An early tripping call for Dario Wüthrich offered the away side a chance to get an advantage on the powerplay and Rögle utilised it perfectly.
Lucas Ekeståhl Jonsson launched the puck into the back of the net with a lovely wrist shot as he skated towards the Zug net from the blueline. With Jonsson's tally, the away side broke the deadlock, just like they did the first time around.
After the goal, the action picked up on both ends, as Zug pushed for an equaliser, whilst Rögle looked to extend their lead. Both teams had big opportunities but kept play well within the rules, keeping penalty minutes down to near nothing.
It took Zug 15 minutes to score the equaliser, as Carl Klingberg found the back of the net during a big scuffle in front of the Rögle net on the powerplay, tying the game 1-1 before heading for the locker rooms.
A goalless second period saw two back-to-back Zug powerplays in the first five minutes before they returned the favour, offering one for Rögle. Both teams racked up twenty-ish shots on the target after 40 minutes of game time, proving just how evenly matched these two clubs were.
The intensity was turned up a notch when both teams returned to the ice for the final period. The play was up and down, formations were mixed but no one seemed to be able to find the back of the net. After a powerplay for each side, Regulation was up and the score was still locked at 1-1 paving the way for three-on-three sudden death OT.
It took Rögle less than a minute of the freed up play to end the game, as Anton Bengtsson found himself completely unmarked in front of Leonardo Genoni’s net and was able to slot the puck into the net with some skillful puck-handling skills.
