- Zug secured Playoff place with win
- HPK lost their first game in regulation time
- 3 of the 4 goals of the game came from powerplays
EV Zug scored the first goal of the game in a powerplay awarded for Arto Laatikainen game delaying penalty and it was as if this powerplay goal would mark the action for the rest of the night, as 3 of the 4 goals of the game came from powerplay situations. Despite HPK Hämeenlinna briefly playing 5 on 3 towards the end of the first period, both sides exited the ice with the score sitting at 1-0 for Zug.
The second period started was dominated by HPK, who were eager to tie the game. They outshot Zug by 13 shots on goal to 3 but were unable to find the back of the net in the opening minutes of the third. In fact, after 10 minutes of the game, Zug’s Carl Klingberg utilised a powerplay awarded for Miro Ruokonen’s high-sticking penalty and added his side’s second on the night. HPK were offered two powerplays thanks to Lino Martschini’s two penalties and with just 7 seconds of the second period remaining, Jere Innala scored his side’s only goal on the night to bring the goal difference back down to a single goal.
7 minutes into the third period Lino Martschini’s added the first equal strength goal of the match with a lovely shot that sailed straight into the top-right corner of the goal and gave Zug back the two-goal advantage. With HPK feeling the game slip from their hands, they pushed up the ice and tried to score, but with no success they resulted to pulling the goalie from the ice with 4 minutes of the game remaining. A 2-minute penalty on both sides reduced the play to 4 on 4, but HPK’s goalie stayed on the bench still giving HPK the extra advantage but with hope dying out, so did time and the game ended with the score still at 3-1 for Zug after 60 minutes of game time.
With results coming in from the simultaneously played game between HC Pilsen and Rungsted IK, HPK's chances of a Playoff place in their debut season were rendered over. On the other hand Zug, along with HC Pilsen, have already secured qualification after just four games.
